Love this place! Great if you are looking for a good place to hike. Primitive campground is a ways in so... be prepared. If raining, this can make it difficult should you be traveling with children. Beautiful park... will definitely be back! Make sure that you visit Utopia for lunch. We stopped at the Lost Maples Cafe before we made our way into the park, it was good home cooking. I had a BLT and my boyfriend had Bean and Cheese Chalupas, the salsa was yummy! Nice little restaurant and the people were friendly.
Wonderful hiking park, we've been coming every year and have never been disappointed. Main loop up the mountain 5.9 miles, 520 ft elevation. Additional 7 miles and 350 ft loop for stronger hikers. Challenging terrain, steep climbs, wonderful views especially during fall change of colors, unique in Texas for that. Does get crowded and closed when full, so get there early.
Very nice park just outside San Antonio. Hiked the east trail on a Friday morning in October. It was about a 4.5 mile loop. There is a strenuous ascent (and descent), but you get nice panoramic views once you get to the top. There's not a great deal of tree cover once you get out of the valley. It was pleasant in October, but I can imagine it would be a very hot hike in summer months. Good area for camping and star gazing with dark skies.
The place is so beautiful around the fall time. A variety of trails from easy, to moderate, to challenging, and very dog friendly. I would never ever recommend using the bathroom in any of the Porto potties. They were absolutely wretched even near the camp sites and primitive campsites. The water is sparkly and clean though which is a huge difference to San Antonio area Creek/river cleanliness.
Beautiful jewel hidden in the Texas Hill country.... Nice drive out. A lot a great views on the way. The park has some good hiking trails and nice camping sites... The bathrooms we're out if service so we had to use ABC houses outside.... Not a pleasant experience ....
